Powell River Non-Profit Societies Purchase The Patricia Theatre

The Friends of the Historic Patricia Theatre Society have purchased the Patricia Theatre from the Patricia Entertainment Company Ltd., with plans to amalgamate with The Friends of Film Society of Powell River. The combined non-profit charitable society is to be renamed the Powell River Film Society.

This fulfills Ann Nelson’s long-term dream for the Patricia to be a community asset. Ann and Brian will continue operating the theatre and sharing their knowledge and expertise with the Society.

“This is an exciting time for Powell River and the Patricia Theatre”, said Ann Nelson, adding… “I know the grand old lady will be well taken care of and continue to serve the community for generations to come.”

The theatre has seen a lot of changes since its start in 1913. Most recently, the community supported the Friends of the Patricia Society in raising $90,000 to purchase the 3D digital projection system installed in 2012.

Barbara Sherriff, chair of the Friends of the Historic Patricia Society, on their mission – “The work we began with the purchase of the projection system comes to fruition with ownership of the Patricia Theatre.”

The non-profit charitable organization will fundraise to support the purchase of the theatre and necessary maintenance and improvements through public outreach, corporate sponsorship, and government support – under the banner Patricia Theatre Forever.

“We’re rallying the troops to help make this happen,” said Lee Coulter, chair of the Powell River Friends of Film Society. “People know us for the annual Powell River Film Festival and our youth programs – we’re expanding our mandate to ensure a permanent home for film in our town.”

The Annual General meeting of the Friends of Film Society of Powell River is November 18, 2018 at 12 pm at the Patricia Theatre. If you have skills and ambition to help make this effort a success, please come out to the AGM and step up to be on the board, fundraising committee, or volunteer roster. In any case, please come out and become a member of the Society for 2019. It’s going to be an awesome year!
