about us
The Powell River Film Festival, now in its 11th year of operation, is a registered non-profit society with charitable status. The Film Festival produces an annual event in February dedicated to showcasing the finest current releases. Our official name is the Friends of Film Society of Powell River. 

OUR MANDATE
•	To raise the public’s artistic knowledge and appreciation of cinematic art by producing an annual film festival 

•	To provide a forum for students and the public to view, discuss and learn from documentary films of the highest aesthetic quality, and to increase their understanding of the art of filmmaking

•	To enhance the knowledge and development of local and regional filmmakers by offering workshops on topics such as animation, camera technology, lighting, sound and editing

Submissions Accepted
Want your film considered for our next festival? Send a copy and letter of introduction to our festival office by Oct. 31. Preference is given to films or videos made within the past year, that can be presented at the festival by the filmmaker.

Come out to our Annual General Meeting (held each spring) and try for a spot on our Board of Directors. The time commitment is generally an hourly meeting each month September - May, and volunteer hours leading up to & during the 3-day festival in mid-February.

Nola Poirier
Film Camp Coordinator
 
Nola is a writer and performance artist.  She currently works as a freelance writer for environmental and social justice organizations. Nola is also in her third year of a Master of Fine Arts degree from UBC, in the Optional-Residency Creative Writing program. Previously a member of the Film Festival's Board of Directors, Nola recently joined the staff as Film Camp Coordinator and will be coordinating the 24-Hour Film Contest again.
 
 
Claudia Medina
Youth Contest Coordinator
Claudia began her career as a filmmaker 15 years ago. She also develops and implements curriculum for workshops that combine community development, conflict resolution and
ecological awareness through filmmaking to diverse groups nationally and internationally. As well as updating the 5-Minute Film Contest, Claudia has been involved with the Film Festival’s grant writing and film programming this year.

Heather Bryant
Box Office Coordinator
Heather was previously the Administrator of the Islands Folk Festival in Duncan. She moved to Powell River to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Heather brings over two decades of event planning and fundraising experience to the team.
Jan Padgett
Festival Director
 
 
Jan has been involved with the festival since its beginning in 2002. She is involved in all aspects of the festival, and is developing the focus on docs and dramatic programs. For the past 20 years, Jan has worked as an independent filmmaker. Her films include the award-winning children’s film The Reluctant Deckhand, Teeshoe: A Powell River Story, and From Under the Bushy Trees.
 
Michelle Hignell
Festival Assistant Director
 
 
Michelle has been working in the film & television industry since graduating from Capilano College’s Media Program in 2003. She has worked for independent production companies and the Knowledge Network. She’s currently coordinating outreach for a feature documentary about diversity in Powell River, and raising a little lad.
